Sophia Bakertges Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Sophia Bakertges, formerly of Center Twp, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020 at her home in Torrance, California. Born on January 19, 1927, she was the daughter of Greek immigrants, Nicholas and Efthimia (Vlahakis) Petrakis, who were from the village of Avgeniki, Island of Crete. Sophia was a graduate of Dormont High School (Pittsburgh) and Grace Martin Business School. She was member of the Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church of Aliquippa, Ladies Philoptochos Society and Greek Senior Citizens. Sophia was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 37 years George Bakertges along with her precious daughter Vicki Lynn (Bakertges) Neumann. She was also preceded in death by a brother George (Jeannette) Petrakes and a sister Mary (Charles) Haley. Sophia is survived by her devoted children: a son Peter Bakertges and former daughter in law, Tracey Bakertges, Center Twp; a daughter Evelyn (James) Brandon, Manhattan Beach, CA who cared for her in her final years; a daughter Diane (Roland) Dechaine, San Diego, CA; and a son-in-law Mark (Carol) Neumann, Manhattan Beach, CA. She was the loving “Yia Yia” of Chelsea Lynn Dechaine, Nicholas George and Christopher Peter Bakertges, Dylan Joseph Dechaine, Stefan George and Christoph Hans Neumann and James Thomas Brandon V. Sophia is also survived by a brother John (Jan) Petrakes, Potomac Falls, VA, a sister Dorothy Petrakes of Scott Twp, PA, along with many nieces and nephews. Mother, The lessons that you have taught us are many. Not as much by word, but more by the example that you have set during a “life well lived”. Many have said that Daddy was the “head” of our family. Everyone knows that you indeed were the “heart” of our family!
