Shirley Mae Sundy, 84 of Hopewell Township, who had been residing at the Willows in McKees Rocks, PA, passed away with family members by her side on Monday, December 21, 2015. She was born on November 20, 1931 in Pittsburgh. A daughter of Mabel Ruth O'Conner and Richard Powers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Russell Anthony Sundy; her brothers, Richard Powers, William Schanz, Gerald Schanz, John Schanz and James Schanz. A brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Peggy Sundy, sisters-in-law, Robin Schanz, Josephine "Tootsie" Jozsa and Eleanor Boring.When Shirley was young she loved to dance. She met her husband while at a dance where Russell was the drummer in the band. She loved to read and would stay up reading into the late night hours. She sang in the Our Lady of Fatima Church choir and was part of a bowling league. However, her true love in life was being a mother. She gave all of herself to raising her daughter. She created a preschool like atmosphere at home and once her daughter began school, was a home room mother and a brownie leader. Later in life, she became a godmother to two of her great nieces, Madison Davis and Holly Schanz. Surviving Shirley is her loving daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and David (Sparky) Sherman of Portland, Oregon; a sister, Linda Kay Johnston; brothers, Robert Schanz and Thomas Schanz. A special niece Terri Davis who was like a daughter to her, Dean Michael Davis and Madison Davis who loved her as Grandma Shirley, sisters-in-law, Sylvia Stetz, Gloria Schanz, Janice Schanz and Christine Schanz; a brother-in-law, Edward Jozsa, as well as numerous other beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley was a loving soul whose laughter and kindness will be missed by many.Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the ANTHONY MASTROFRANCESCO FUNERAL HOME INC. 2026 McMINN Street, Aliquippa, 724-375-0496 Departing prayers will begin Thursday, 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church with Father Howard Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Light of Life Mission or Beaver County Humane Society in memory of Shirley.
